Kachinas are supernatural beings who inhabit the realms of mist and magic in Hopi culture. They are not worshipped as deities, but are thought of as helpers. Allies. Connecting one to the power of nature. The Kachina Dances have a purpose in the tribe - to promote fertile cropes and abundance. They are bringers of rain, and answers to every need.
Sunface Kachina is the spirit of the sun - the brightest and largest of all stars in the desert sky. Peace, happiness, abundance, and continuity are its characteristics.
The depiction of the Sunface generally is of a round face with rectangular eyes and a small circle for the mouth. The forehead is split into 2 sections to represent sunrise and sunset. Another meaning is that every person is both an individual, and a member of the family. The petal-like inlaid pieces around the face are meant to represent the suns rays.
