An incredibly unusual ethnic pendant from the Victorian era.
Lapis Lazuli is a stone of the sky. It's name means, literally "heaven". Believed by the ancients to be heaven sent -- like the starry sky shrunken down into a precious gem in ever changing shades of blue, from darkest indigo to bright bluebird.
In ancient scrolls and paintings, lapis adorns Pharaohs, Queens, and Goddesses, perhaps holding all the knowledge of the universe.
Catherine the Great had a whole room adorned in Lapis Lazuli. Michelangelo ground it down to blue pigment powder to create the blue sky of the Sistine Chapel.
This pendant has confounded my experts. We believe it's probably Balinese, Nepali, or Tibetan. It does have a maker's mark that we can't identify. It is most definitely a hand made, beautiful quality tribal design. The rectangular "stone" is a variable color of teal-ish blue - glass? The bead is lapis, and the beaded necklace is faceted round lapis. The toggle clasp is new, selected to match the pendant. A gorgeous, unique necklace.

In Crystal circles, it is used to help attain wisdom, and in dream work.
