About Malachite
Malachite shares many properties with turquoise. The essence of joy, It is a stone of protection, transformation, and courage, widely used not only by Native American jewelers, but historically by the Greeks, and Egyptians as far back as 4000BC. Also a favored stone of alchemists, it can actually reduce blood pressure - thereby reducing fear (!) and is great for those who fear airline travel especially! It is rejuvenating and uplifting and can bring harmony into your life.
One of the gorgeous copper minerals -- the more water in the copper, the lighter the green color, and less water makes the darker greens. it is often used for copper ore -- but it's way too beautiful to make pennies from! It's name may come from the Greek word Malakos, which means soft, or Malhe, meaning green. Soft greens of all shades band and swirl in malachite.
It's said that Cleopatra and wealthy Egyptians ground the stone for eye-shadow, and she was buried with a large vase of it for use in the afterlife!
Malachite was used in Renaissance paintings as pigment for paints, and it is believed that the fantastic green colors found in Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel were painted with malachite-based paint.
Fun fact: In 1835 a malachite boulder of extreme high-quality was found in Russia that took 21 years to fully unearth! Slabs from this 260-ton boulder were used to created pillars, columns and walls in Russian palaces, and 10 huge Corinthian columns in St. Isaac's Catherdral in St. Petersburg.
